What changed
On September 15, Anthropic expanded Claude for Small Business, a plugin that runs inside Claude Cowork, its desktop app for working with files and connected tools. The plugin launched on May 13 with 15 ready-to-run workflows. Anthropic now lists 43 workflows and 37 partner connectors, including Shopify, Stripe, Square, Xero, Gusto, Salesforce, TikTok Ads, and Zapier, alongside earlier ones like QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, and Canva. The workflows cover jobs such as a weekly Monday briefing, responding to new leads, drafting proposals, planning marketing campaigns, and month-end bookkeeping. Anthropic says every workflow starts in approval mode: Claude drafts and stages the work, and nothing sends, posts, or pays until the owner says so. The company also says the plugin has been installed more than 900,000 times since May, and that it works on all paid Claude plans, with the Team plan recommended for businesses with more than one user.
The honest nuance
Three different things get called "AI" here, and the difference matters. A chat tool answers a question and stops; you carry the answer into your other software yourself. A workflow automation, the kind Zapier and similar tools have offered for years, follows fixed steps: when this happens, do that. An agent is given a goal, reads from your connected tools, decides which steps to take, and can act inside them. Claude for Small Business is closer to the last two: prebuilt workflows carried out by an AI that can use your accounts. The catch is that "can take actions" is where mistakes start costing money. The approval default is a sound design, but it only protects you if someone actually reads what Claude staged. Anthropic also says owners can switch a workflow to run on its own schedule once they trust it, which is a decision to make one workflow at a time. A long connector list does not guarantee a workflow fits your particular setup, and Anthropic's product pages do not put a price on heavy use, while the partner tools keep their own subscriptions. The company does say most workflows can also run from an uploaded spreadsheet or statement, so you can test without connecting anything.
Why it matters for your business
Forbes reports that Anthropic spent the summer asking small business owners what they wanted next, and about a third gave a version of the same answer: help me sell. That helps explain the new connectors for commerce, payments, CRM, and ads. For a small team, the appeal is less about smarter answers and more about the connective work between tools, like turning last week's orders and payments into a summary, drafting replies to new leads, or getting the books ready for month end, without paying a developer to wire everything together. That can save real time if the task is genuinely repetitive. It also changes what you are responsible for. A chatbot's bad answer wastes a few minutes. A workflow with access to your invoices, customer list, or ad account can send the wrong message or spend the wrong amount, so permissions and review become part of the job. Which customers to chase, which ad spend to cut, and what to charge are still your calls.
What to actually do
Pick one repetitive, low-risk workflow and run it in approval mode for a month. A weekly sales summary or a batch of draft replies to new leads are good candidates, because a wrong draft costs you a minute, not money. Before you start, connect only the tools that workflow needs, keep anything that sends, posts, or pays on approval, and write down how long the task takes you today. Each week, note the minutes saved, how many drafts you had to fix, and any added plan or usage cost. If the numbers do not show a clear saving after a month, you have lost very little. If they do, add a second workflow, and only then consider letting the first one run without your sign-off.
