Shopify Is Opening Up AI Shopping: What Store Owners Need to Know
Shopify now lets shoppers connect compatible AI assistants to their Shop account to find products and check out with their approval. Here is what changed and what to review.

What changed
On October 13, 2026, Shopify opened its product catalog to more AI assistants through a new service called Shop MCP. Shoppers can connect a compatible AI assistant to their Shop account, have it search a catalog of more than a billion listings, build a cart and pay with Shop Pay once they approve the purchase. Orders and tracking stay in the shopper's Shop account. This follows a separate step on September 28, when Shopify let AI agents working inside a shopper's web browser complete checkout on Shopify stores with the buyer's authorization.
The honest nuance
This widens access; it does not mean every AI assistant can now buy from your store. Availability depends on which assistants have connected to Shopify's service, and Shopify has not published a single list or launch date that covers all of them. A buyer still has to approve each purchase. And being in the catalog that an assistant can search is not the same as being recommended by it: there is no public formula for which products an assistant suggests, so anyone promising placement is guessing.
Why it matters for your business
If you sell on Shopify, some customers may now find and buy your products without ever visiting your storefront. When that happens, the assistant is working from your product data: titles, descriptions, variants, prices, stock levels, shipping times and return policy. Anything vague, out of date or missing is what the shopper sees, or it is the reason your product gets skipped. That makes your catalog data the first impression, not your storefront.
What to actually do
Pick your ten best-selling products and read each listing as if you were a stranger who cannot see the photos: is the title specific, is the size or variant clear, are the price and stock correct? Make sure your shipping times and return policy are written plainly in your store settings and policy pages. If you would rather some products not appear in AI shopping at all, check Shopify's Help Center for its current product visibility and AI discovery controls before changing anything, because turning off a single sales channel may not be enough to keep products out of Shopify's catalog. Skip paid services that promise better AI placement until someone can show you real results.
